I made up a little quiz/game for you to partake in. Please complete the following statement:

If you answered a:
You are typically British - a la new style. Caffe Nero is Britain's 'favourite coffee shop' as proclaimed by their marketing line on every one of their storefronts that have invaded every commercial street in the UK. You're new style because nothing about Nero is very British at all, actually. They pride themselves on having the best Italian espresso this side of Milan. (And what if you trek eastward from Milan instead? I wonder who's the best on the other side...)

If you answered b:
You're mainstream with a twist. And that twist is a bit of social consciousness. Your love of a heartwarming cup of coffee in this chain's warm, rich interiors that mimic it's rival Costa's, is complemented by the high-end(ish) menu that features many fair trade choices. You veer away from other high street rivals by choosing the smallest, least intrusive in terms of shops per capita as your chill out place, keenly demonstrating your need to stand apart and actually take the opportunity to relax while still making a big statement.

If you answered c:
You are both generous and decadent but enjoy also the simpler things in life. You're cup of coffee is so large that you need two handles to manage to lift the size that comes after medio (sorry, couldn't remember the word) and the taste that filters through is only the finest and most flavourful. You can't really go wrong with a cup of joe from Costa, nor can you with one of their cups of tea (which sadly, is not the case of some of it's rivals... I mean, come on, it's tea - I'm not picky, but it's problematic when you can't get TEA right). The simplicity of the menu and the decor of these shops also reflects on your outlook on life - you prefer for things to be easy-going and relaxed.

If you answered d:
Well la-di-da, look who's trad, kitsch and totally rich all wrapped into one. You're version of the traditional 'cuppa' is just that, a customary cup of tea (afternoon or black) poured from a teapot - no kettles here - offered in the gigantic reception room of the Fortnum and Mason shop and served with scones and sandwiches. When people from outside of the UK think of a cup of tea - the Fortnum and Mason version of High Tea is just what they're imagining. Pinkies up!*

If you answered e:
You are uber so-phis-ti-kay with a whole lot of style (and moolah) to match. Coffee/Tea might be cheap as chips everywhere else you go, but you prefer it like you prefer everything - expensive and luxurious. And what's wrong with that? ... Absolutely nothing at all. Your choice of hot drinks venue also shows your appeal for a bit of the old mixed with a whole lot of the new as you're willing to try out new fab tastes and spur on that cutting edge image you've established (a la Sloane set) while remaining fully aware of the quintessences of British style and power.

If you answered f:
You like you're life how you like you're coffee: always on the move (and with chocolate powder stars on top). You don't stop to enjoy a cup of coffee - who needs that? There are more important things to enjoy in life, so you take your cup to go, go, go and use your cuppa as fuel to get you where you need to be. You are determined and straightforward, just like Pret a Manger shops and their corresponding drinks menu (minus the chocolate stars).

If you answered g:
I hate to break it to you, but if you're British you seem to have either a very great love of the American way (you should seriously think about converting) or if you're American, you're in denial and haven't learned to truly appreciate the intricacies of the British lifestyle. Starbucks lovers, I still do love you despite my harsh words, but if it's your favourite UK coffee shop, we have a little bit of a problem on our hands. Pick something else.

* If this description seems inaccurate, it may well be as I've never bothered to go into F&M for high tea.
